Blacktown is home to Australia’s most desirable dunny

QIC Westpoint Shopping Centre in Blacktown, NSW has been named Australia’s Best Bathroom 2019. QIC Westpoint narrowly beat runner-up ‘P!NK Ladies’ at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre (BEC) to the top spot.

Others to receive acknowledgement as highly commended were; Wynnum Plaza in Brisbane, Bathroom 54 at Sydney Airport and a private property on Glenmore Rd in Sydney.

Now in its fifth year, the eagerly anticipated competition is run by Total Facilities, Australia’s largest facilities management exhibition, taking place next week (20th – 21st March) at ICC Darling Harbour, Sydney.

“The aim of the competition is to encourage awareness of some of the best bathrooms in Australia among facilities and workplace management professionals,” says Andrew Lawson, Total Facilities event manager. “We have been so impressed with the quality of competition entries this year. The level of innovation and adoption of new technologies has been outstanding.”

QIC Westpoint Shopping Centre’s porcelain palaces make user experience and inclusivity a priority. Maximum comfort and convenience is provided for all needs including accessible, ambulant, juniors, parents and people with carers; whilst also offering inviting, fresh spaces with timber, terrazzo, soft cove lighting and cascading planting for a natural touch.

There are individual feeding ‘pods’ which are timber-ribbed hives for parents and children to take time away from the bustle of the shopping centre.

The design uses timber and soft cove lighting to create an inviting space. And the cascading planting brings a natural touch to the surroundings.

“Amenities are often treated as spaces of necessity. Challenging that way of thinking, QIC committed to providing their customers with something more,” says Magdalena Uscinowicz, National Interior Design Manager at i2C Architects, the architectural and interiors firm who were charged with the design for QIC’s Westpoint Shopping Centre. “As a result, the design team were able to push design boundaries and set benchmarks in the industry by proving the human experience can be enhanced in any space.”

Each year the Best Bathroom Facility competition is open to public bathrooms in spaces such as commercial buildings, shopping centres, hotels or recreational grounds. But they must go above and beyond in the design and innovation stakes.

“We evaluate bathrooms on design, innovation, aesthetics and products and services that improve wellbeing for everyone,” explains Total Facilities’ Andrew Lawson. “This competition profiles some of the most progressive organisations which are at the forefront of bathroom experiences.”

This year, second place was awarded to the P!NK Ladies Bathroom at the BEC. P!NK is the biggest selling artist in the BEC’s 33 year history and the bathroom was created to commemorate her record breaking achievement.  P!NK personally opened the bathroom in 2009 after selling out 11 shows and smashing all previous records at the Centre.

Other dream dunnies to receive awards for Highly Commended include:

  • Wynnum Plaza in Brisbane, which has transformed its twenty-year-old facilities using advanced technology within the constraints of a relatively modest budget. The result is a more user friendly layout that’s fresh and bright.
  • A bathroom in the home on Glenmore Rd in Sydney is like no other. A tiny space with angled and exaggerated ceiling heights made this old bathroom cramped and unworkable but clever thinking and spatial planning, combined with a playful material pallet has made this a bathroom a favourite room in the house.
  • Integrating four additional major elements never before brought together in a single bathroom set in an Australian airport, Sydney Airport’s Bathroom 54 initiative will likely inform the future design of bathroom facilities across the industry and help drive a greater focus on accessibility amenities across both regional and metropolitan airports.
