My New Premises is DDA Compliant. But is it DDA Friendly and Usable?

Smart Buildings Theatre

Whilst for many years premises undertaking a full refurbishment or change of use have been required to meet Disability and Discrimination standards, the question still arises as to the adequacy of these minimum design rules. Diversity and Inclusion has gained in prominence over recent years. Applying a wider scope and usability lens to the standards leads to some interesting insights. Using a recent project as a practical example, Paul Sor of the Australian Red Cross Society, and Angelo Sansano who worked as a client-side representative on the new State office in Adelaide for Red Cross examine the practical side of DDA compliance and usability. Even designing beyond the DDA requirements does not necessarily make for a DDA friendly or diverse and inclusive space. This paper explores simple changes and tips to really make your space friendly and usable for all to use. A tips sheet is included in the presentation.
