Five Fabulous Hotel Designs
Hotels are so hot right now. All over the world, global brands are shifting and merging to provide guests with the most memorable hotel experiences, and capitalise on a growing demographic obsessed with the latest trends. In Australia, the hotel market is growing too; it's about time. And for the first time in many years, there's a smorgasbord of new hotel builds offering architects and designers an opportunity to have some fun and frivolity, while delivering some serious luxury and high-tech smarts. Here's our round up of the latest and greatest.

Hotel Hotel – Canberra
Canberra’s Hotel Hotel takes uniqueness to another level. Unlike mainstream hotels similar in furniture style and design, Hotel Hotel was produced through a collaboration with designers, artists, artisans and fantasists – with a sensational result. Each room, or ”˜atrium’ as some are titled, is designed with natural, muted colours and curved, sleek furniture reminiscent of David Lynch film set.
The ground floor hosts Monster Kitchen and Bar, using seasonal produce to create sharing dishes, while Hotel Hotel is also a ”˜vessel for ongoing cultural and artistic creation’ as the venue for a series of creative exhibitions and events.
Melbourne QT – Melbourne
For travellers who enjoy a touch of eccentricity, Melbourne now has its own QT branded hotel. Set within the high-end fashion district of town, Melbourne QT is a boutique hotel is a cut above driven by design and executed with bespoke finishes at every turn.
Guest rooms boast sophisticated timber floorboards, comfortable gel-topped beds, glamorous, monochrome ensuites and innovative industrial lighting fixtures. On the rooftop, a sumptuous garden of fresh produce is harvested and prepared for the hotel’s restaurant, Pascale Bar and Grill. The hotel’s concierge and reception areas are complete with bespoke designer furnishings and curated modern artwork, offering both quirkiness and luxury.
Notel – Melbourne
Notel claims to be like no other hotel. Located on the roof of a nondescript carpark in Melbourne’s CBD, Notel offers five 31-foot chrome trailers for guests to stay in. The rooftop space is designed so that guests can enjoy a large communal area before stepping into a compact trailer, complete with a queen-size bed, WiFi, an iPad pro (Netflix included) and a virtual concierge with recommendations of where to eat, drink and go in Melbourne.
Prime position is given to the ”˜airstream with benefits’ which comes with a secluded deck and spa overlooking Flinders Lane.
Aloft – Perth
Aloft Perth is the newest hotel hotspot by Design Theory. Taking inspiration from stylish loft spaces, Design Theory has created an adaptive and contemporary hotel that feels both luxurious and comfortable – complete with industrial details, indoor plants, exposed services, open floor plans and warm furniture.
Aloft offers mixed-media artworks and a pool wall mural, all created by local artists. The rooftop entertainment space is open, large and includes minimalist white furniture, allowing guests to enjoy the warm Perth nights with spectacular views. Every design detail is carefully considered, simple and effective – making it a delight for the senses.
Jackalope – Victoria
Jackalope is set on a stunning property amid Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula wine region. Winner of the 2017 Gourmet Traveller Hotel Award and several other awards, Jackalope is unique for its location and design.
The designers, Carr Design Group, worked collaboratively with some of Australia’s best creatives to create a hotel featuring art and world-class design. The 46 designer ”˜dens’ offer guests floor-to-ceiling windows and private terraces that connect the contemporary interior with the lush country surrounds. For an even more specialised experience, guests may choose one of the ”˜lairs’ for their stay. Each lair includes a double sided indoor/outdoor fireplace, cocktail bar and a personal wine cellar among a host of high-end inclusions.
